Faray

Faray is a small island in Orkney, Scotland, lying between Eday and Westray. The low-lying island was inhabited until the 1930s and is now home to an important grey seal colony.

A small uninhabited island of the Orkney Isles, Faray and the Holm of Faray to the north form a ridge of Middle Old Red Sandstone that extends southwards from Weather Ness at the southern tip of the island of Westray. Rising to a height of 32m (105 feet), Faray has an area of 180ha (445 acres). In the early 1930s there were 40 people on the island earning a living from crofting and lobster fishing.

Scottish grey seal islands nominated for special status - The islands of Faray and Holm of Faray, part of the Orkney Islands, have been proposed by the government for designation as Special Areas of Conservation. This status, aimed at protecting sites of scientific importance under the European Community's Habitats Directive, will aid the protection of the rare grey seals which breed there. The public consultation period on the proposed designation ends on 23 December 1997. (6 October 1997)
